Our herd was registered in December 2002 primarily for two reasons: Our love for breeding cattle and the record keeping that had been done since 1992. The herd is run on the farm Goodwoods in the Port Alfred/Grahamstown area of the Eastern Cape. Heartwater, Redwater and Gallsickness are endemic to this area. Veld type is mainly valley bushed interspersed with sourveld and planted grass pasture. The average rainfall is approx 600mm a year and can fall at anytime of the year. Phosphate licks are provided in summer and protein supplements in winter.

The herd originates from appendix A and B cows and heifers bred on the farm. These were bred from L.G.Stirk and Son and Glynn Handley bulls. Since registration “golden Oldies” have been bought from Norton Thompson, Glynn Handley, Peter Knott and Fourie Scheepers. Twenty stud cows were also bought on the dispersal sale of L G Stirk and Son.

The herd consists of 170 breeding cows with an autumn and spring mating season. Both natural and AI mating are used. Proven sires such as GCD96-108, NPT91-020, EI94-339, CEF99-287, CEF02-328 and JRB98-158 have had a huge impact on the herd. Current herd sires include bulls from Glynn Handley, Norton Thompson and Fourie Scheepers. Cattle are immunized against Botulism, Black Quarter, anthrax, all clostridiums, Gallsickness and Rift Valley Fever.

Erwin Church has been a consultant to the herd since 2003 and his knowledge has been a tremendous help in our endevour to breed cattle suited to the harsh realities of the Eastern Cape.
