Our cattle run on the farm 'Seaview' in the Alexandria district near to Nanaga. The farm consists of coastal bush and plains, valley bushveld , K11 and Rhodes grass pastures. Licks are only fed during droughts. The average rainfall is 650mm and can fall at anytime of the year. The ground that we farm on is to say the least tick infested with heartwater, redwater and gallsickness the most common diseases.
The first Bonsmara bulls used in our herd were bought from Ian Lloyd in the late 1970's. Other bulls used before registering our herd were bought from Ted Birch, Mike Shuman, Norton Thompson and Glyn Handley. Some females were also bought from Gordon Knott and Norton Thompson. After selling our dairy herd in 1995, and being heavily involved with stud breeding Ayreshire and Holsteins, it was a natural progression to register part of our Bonsmara herd in December 2000. Two bulls were bought from Arthur de Villiers near Vrede in the same year.
We have a winter and a summer breeding season and no animal is kept if it does not rear a calf every year - no chances. The herd is vaccinated and the bulls are sheath washed annually. At present our main emphasis is on breeding fertile females with lots of milk and good conformation. Herd sires being used at present are NPT 05140, NPT 05106 (both Norton Thompson), WCS 058(Wally Stay) and LDW 0630 (Ashleigh Whitfield). The following AI bulls have also been used VV 9461, TBR 91704, AG 9659, AG 92282, FCT 9724 and EI 94339.
