The “national” breed scientifically bred in South Africa for South Africa and appreciated throughout Africa and many other parts of the world. It thrives in the arid, hot Kalahari as well as it does in the sub zero temperatures of Canada.
Its ability to adapt to its environment while maintaining functional efficiency and fertility is the breed’s greatest asset. Furthermore, it combines the beef qualities of British beef breeds with the disease resistance and hardiness of Afrikaner cattle. With the biggest number of performance tested females (56087), an average ICP of 405 days, an average birth weight of 35 and an average weaning weight of 218 over this number of tested females places the Bonsmara as the preferred breed amongst South African farmers. The Bonsmara thrives under all feeding scenarios and with its fine grained tender meat is one of the sought after breeds of feedlotters.
Diversity of genetics within the breed also provides great scope to breeders and commercial farmers. It crosses well with all breeds of cattle and has a wonderful docile temperament. |
